Madeira Travel Information

A wonderful ‘away from it all’ island famed for its healing properties and the home of Christopher Columbus. It’s not hard to see why despite his world travels, Columbus decided to settle here or why it is the place where many so Madeirans and Portuguese take their holidays. The island is a laid back haven with a lovely 5 mile long flat sandy beach offering superb views, tropical gardens and great watersports.

Most of the island’s 5,000 inhabitants live in the small capital Vila Baleira which has several shops,  bars and restaurants and one tourist attraction  - the house of Christopher Columbus who married the Governor’s daughter in 1479.  This lovely tranquil place is ideal for families and couples looking for quiet relaxing holiday. And is also available for as part of a two-centre holiday with Madeira.

There’s scuba-diving, windsurfing, sailing, deep-sea fishing and horse-riding and a local hotel spa which is open to all visitors.

Eating Out
Eating out the choices are from fairly simple menus of fresh local farm produce and locally produced wine and many of them are right on the beach. There is no nightlife as such other than that which you make for yourself but some restaurants will offer a ‘there and-back’ car service taking you back to your hotel after your dinner.

There are is no international airport on the island of Porto Santo.  Flights are to Funchal, Madeira and from there you take a ferry to the island.  An overnight stay in Madeira may be necessary on some departures.
